Jon Myers, Yahoo, interviews Ciaran Norris, Head of Digital, Mindshare Ireland, and Tom Jones, Head of Media, iCrossing, both of whom spoke on the Beyond Search: different ad formats, ppc, and social media panel at SES London 2011. Ciaran says there is so much more available to marketers beyond Google and limiting your objectives to being just on the first page of Google rankings. Tom says the shift in data beyond Google is dramatic but online retailers must consider the new ad formats, with the emergence of site links and ad extensions, for products and places, which works to reinforce credibility in the online marketplace. Jon sums up the discussion by highlighting the new additions to ad display formats and demand site platforms.

Jamie Smith, CEO, Engine Ready, interviews Stacie Susens, Kenshoo (Stacie previously worked at Resolution Media) on the panel “Ultimate Search Battle” at SES Chicago 2010. Jamie asks Stacy the million dollar question, what is more important, paid search or SEO? Stacy says it is a hybrid approach, using both paid and natural search can drive the best outcomes for your business and generate insights from each channel. Stacy says both paid search and natural search have their benefits and their cons, so when you play off the pros and cons of each you will get the best results for your business. Jamie says if you do have a top organic ranking, try running your ads on the lower side of the page and test the real-estate; the same applies if you have an organic ranking that doesn’t rank in the top 2 or 3 listings of Google, then try experimenting with a paid ad at the top of the page.

http://www.SERoundtable.com/ – This week at the Search Engine Roundtable I cover a nice amount of topics, I wanted to highlight the most important items. First, Yahoo Site Explorer has dropped out a ton of the links, Yahoo is saying it is Microsoft’s fault. Google did a PageRank update for some. Google is testing a new AdWords Preview Tool, check it out. Advertisers are seeing huge spikes in cost per click costs since the Yahoo and adCenter migration. Google may have stopped indexing Blogspot domains. Google might not wipe out your old links after a reconsideration request, but you should submit one when you buy a new domain and there is no way to cancel it. We have some more May Day theories for you. Google talked a bit about HTML5 and how they index it, on an SEO basis. Google brought back the report offensive images in Google Image Search. Google is testing a new auto detect location feature. Google Maps now divides reviews from third part sources. We covered SES Chicago this week. Google had a logo for Dizzy Gillespie, famous Jazz trumpeter and they now have logos for your very own birthday. That was this week at the Search Engine Roundtable.
